Marjorie Smith - May 29, 2013
Marjorie Marie (Laswell) Smith was born near Richland, Mo., to Sim and Stella (York) Laswell on Nov. 9, 1915, and died May 29, 2013, at the age of 97, at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke.
Marjorie received her education in a rural school for eight years then went to high school in Richland. She was united in marriage on March 21, 1936, to Cecil Smith, and to this union two children were born: Larry and Marilyn.
Marjorie taught school for one year and worked for International Shoe Company for seven years and helped with the farming operation until 1963. The family left the farm and moved to Holyoke, where they operated the O.K. Tire Store, where Marjorie was the bookkeeper for 12 years. Due to Cecil’s failing health, they sold the tire store; however, for the next 20 years they were able to enjoy traveling with their camper.
Marjorie was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and taught Bible classes for many years.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Sim and Stella Laswell; husband, Cecil; and daughter, Marilyn.
She is survived by her son, Larry and wife Lois of Otis; son-in-law, Carr Conway of Parker; six grandchildren, Jeri Lee Perry, Judy Deshayes, Jim Smith, Justin Smith, Kari Phillips and April Conway; 12 great-grandchildren, Grace Smith, Cody Perry, Travis Perry, Doug Perry, Bradley Perry, Rebecca Smith, Daniel Smith, Joshua Smith, Derek Smith, Monte Deshayes, Zachary Phillips, Courtney Phillips and Justin Phillips; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends.
The funeral service was held June 1 at the Church of Christ in Holyoke with Dan Kafka officiating. There will be an inurnment at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Richland.
Baucke Funeral Home of Holyoke directed the service.
