Kurtis Huss - August 20, 2013
Kurtis Huss of Fort Collins was born Oct. 27, 1987. He died the evening of Aug. 20, 2013, following a courageous and arduous battle with testicular cancer. Kurtis was a loving and caring husband, son, brother, uncle, teacher and coach.
He was born and raised in Holyoke, where he graduated from Holyoke High School in 2006. He then attended Colorado State University, where he graduated in 2010 with a B.A. degree in history. On June 16, 2012, Kurtis married Liz Melahn. He taught high school social studies and English at Polaris Expeditionary Learning School and coached girls’ lacrosse at Thompson Valley High School.
Kurtis enjoyed life to the fullest degree. He was an inspiration to all that knew him, both before and during his fight with cancer. Kurtis was kind, funny and driven; he loved to spend time outside playing golf, watching sports and exploring. His classroom was always filled with learning and joy. He touched many lives, and all those who knew him will miss him deeply.
He leaves behind his wife, Liz Melahn; dog, Chauncey; parents, Gary and Joyce Huss; sister, Heather Bieber and husband Brett; nieces, Aubrey and Laityn Bieber; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and countless friends, students and lacrosse players.
An outdoor celebration of Kurtis’ life was held Aug. 25 at Registry Park in Fort Collins.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions may be made to the Kurtis Huss Memorial Scholarship Fund that will begin awarding students from Polaris Expeditionary Learning School and Holyoke High School with money to continue their education.
