Mary Race - September 10, 2013
Mary Margaret (Meile) Race of Ovid died and entered into rest on Sept. 10, 2013. Mary Margaret was born on Nov. 20, 1919, in Haxtun to Louis and Jessie (Carter) Meile. She lived on a farm north of Haxtun and attended rural schools. The family moved to Boulder in 1938.
On Jan. 19, 1941, Mary Margaret married Runyon R. Race; they had 63 wonderful years together. To this union they had two children, David and Darrell. They lived on the family farm south of Ovid, raising wheat and feeding Hereford cattle.
She was a homemaker and loved to travel with Runyon. She was a member and prided herself on her time spent in the Farmerettes, a rural farm Extension club. Mary Margaret and Runyon traveled extensively in all 50 states, Mexico, Canada and Europe.
Mary Margaret is survived by her sons, David and wife Karen of Denver and Darrell and wife Marla of Ovid; sister, Betty Crandall of Eloy, Ariz.; brother, Jim Meile of Green Valley, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Sowokinos of Columbus, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Runyon; sisters, Pauline Bednar Cleveland, Billy Hiatt, Maxine Lanckriet and Irene Bogott; and parents, Louis and Jessie Meile.
Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at the Ovid Methodist Church with Pastor Kristie Firme officiating. Burial followed at the Ovid Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the Ovid Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Austin-Tennant Funeral Home of Julesburg was in charge of arrangements.
