Don Beckius - February 26, 2014


Donald Dean Beckius, age 80, died at Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke on Feb. 26, 2014. Donald was born June 5, 1933, at Ogallala Memorial Hospital in Ogallala, Neb. His parents were Henry M. and Wilma Z. Beckius of Keystone, Neb.

Don attended grade school in Keystone, graduating from Ogallala High School. He was baptized and confirmed and was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church.

Don married Gloria Einspahr of Ovid on April 14, 1956, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Ogallala. They had two daughters: Kimberly Ann and Brenda Lea.

Don experienced many occupations in his lifetime. He was excited at 16 when he drove a Farmall Super C tractor in the hay field in Arthur, Neb. Later he worked in Ogallala at Walker’s Sinclair, Goodall Mfg. Co. and leasing a Texaco station.

In 1967, his family moved to Holyoke. Don transferred his membership to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke. Don worked for Schmidt Motor Supply. Later he worked at Highline Electric Association until he retired after almost 33 years.

In Don’s retirement years, he had Don’s Lawn Service. He enjoyed mowing lawns for others and working in his garden and also doing some woodworking on the side. Don always had an interest in the Farmall tractor, and in later years he purchased a Super C, an H and a Super M, and with the help of a friend, they restored the Super M.

He was a member of the Holyoke Lions Club for 35-plus years and was always willing to help where he was needed. In 2008, he was chosen as the outstanding member of the Lions Club.

Don was preceded in death by his father and mother; godchild and niece, Shelly Hatch; nephew, Justin Beckius; and son-in-law, Larry Redden.

Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria Beckius; his daughters, Kimberly Redden and Brenda Tracy and husband Bruce; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Annette Calkins and husband Phil of Grant, Neb., and Carolyn Ballentine and husband Dayton of Brule, Neb.; brother, Bernard Beckius and wife Cheryl of Keystone; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The rosary was held March 2 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke. Mass of Christian Burial was held March 3 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Bill Jungmann officiating.
