Born on the family farm south of Wray, Dave attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse known as the Dry Willow District #97. His fondest memory was riding a horse to and from school. Livestock was always passion of Dave’s and as a youngster he was active in 4-H, raising and showing Herefords.

In 1959, Dave met and married Laverne Brown. To that union, Laverne brought two children, John and Diana Heginbotham. In 1962, Brenda Lee was born and welcomed into the family.
