Vera Hagemann - November 12, 2009
Vera Jane (Jaycox) Hagemann, the fourth of nine children, was born April 4, 1918 to Bertrand and Beulah (Beam) Jaycox, in the Pleasant Valley Community, Phillips County. She died Nov. 12, 2009 in Holyoke at the age of 91 years, seven months and eight days.
All the Jaycox children were very proud of their Iroquois Indian heritage.
Vera was educated in the Pleasant Valley School District. Their family had many hardships to overcome. They lost their home to the tornado Nov. 7, 1922. Vera, her mother and sister were lifted by the tornado, being put back on the ground in the pasture. She received a cut lip and her mother gave birth the next day to a son.
Vera lost both her father and mother by the time she was 19 years old, leaving five younger siblings for her to help raise. The youngest, Alberta, was 2 years old.
Vera was united in marriage to Harold Glen Hagemann on Aug. 13, 1938 in Atwood, Kan. Shortly after her marriage, she and Harold gave her younger five siblings a home. Betty, Wanda and Alberta spent many years at her home. Vera and Harold were blessed with three children, Dennis, Gary and Deanna.
They lived on several farms in the Holyoke area, buying their own farm in March of 1947. They sold their farm in 1957 and bought the Holyoke Liquor Store, which they sold in 1976. Vera was a volunteer/employee at the Holyoke Library for 25 years. She also volunteered at the Meet and Eat for many years. Through a nomination from her granddaughter Denise, she was named Citizen of the Year by the VFW in 1981.
She is preceded in death by her husband Harold in 1998; son Gary in 1975; her parents; brothers, Everett, George and Kenneth; and sister Wauneta Cole.
She will be missed by her family.
Surviving her are her son Dennis and wife Lynda of Holyoke; daughter Deanna of Thornton; daughter-in-law Lolly (Chuck Marcum) of Greeley; five grandchildren, Denise Hagemann of Liberal, Kan., Ken Hagemann of Denver, Scott (Heather) Hagemann of Arvada, Shana (Greg) LeNeveu of Louisville and Senea (Brent) Frailey of Thornton; and great-grandchildren McKenzie Wright, Hadley and Reed Hagemann, Jack and Garrett LeNeveu, Gage and Hadyn Frailey; four sisters, Lois Fernstrom of Yakama, Wash., Betty Mintling of Wauneta, Neb., Wanda Higgenbottom of Cañon City and Alberta and Don Karraker of Cortez; brother-in-law Howard Hagemann of Haxtun; sister-in-law Edith Gentry of Lakewood; a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends she has made over her life.
Funeral service was Monday, Nov. 16 at Gerk Funeral Home, with Jim Blake officiating. Interment was in the Holyoke Cemetery.
