Helen Tickle - November 20, 2009
Helen Tickle, 93, was born Oct. 27, 1916 in Perkins County, Neb. near Grant, Neb. She died at Golden Ours early Friday morning, Nov. 20, 2009.
She was the fifth of seven children born to John and Bertha Johnson Stephenson. She grew up on the family farm southwest of Grant where she attended country school. Helen attended high school in Grant and graduated from Perkins County High School in 1933.
Helen was married to Ralph Tickle on Nov. 28, 1937 at Julesburg. They made their first home near Madrid, Neb. and later moved to a home southwest of Grant. In 1947 they moved into their home south of Grant. In addition to supporting Ralph on the farm, Helen worked in town as a waitress and a store clerk for Sullivan’s and Aten’s department stores.
Ralph died in 1999 and Helen moved to Westview Retirement in 2000. She moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent home in November of 2004.
Helen always had a smile and a friendly disposition. She was active in the United Methodist church and the U.M.W. She was a past member of the Grant Legion Auxiliary and always enjoyed her quilting club.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Hearn; four brothers, Glen, Ray, Virgil and Lawrence Stephenson and one sister, Mae Edwards.
She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Spratt of Grant and Charlene and husband Don Lininger of Holyoke; two sons, Galen and wife Judy, and Kevin, all of Grant; nine grandchildren, David Spratt Kimberly Kuhs, Pamela Worley, Michael Lininger, Dana McArtor, Brenda McClenahan, Sheila Uridil, Kristopher Hearn and Jason Hearn; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Parrish of Grant; two sisters-in-law, June Tickle in Michigan and Anna Hardgrove in Washington; other relatives and friends.
Services were held Nov. 23, 2009 at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Savage officiating.
Music was provided by Lori McCloskey and Donice Holaway.
Casket Bearers were Michael Lininger, Kristopher Hearn, Jason Hearn, Christopher Johner, Brent McArtor and Brenden Worley.
Interment was in the Grant Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge arrangements.
