Final preparations being made for county fair

The time is now for everyone looking forward to the Phillips County Fair.

Preparations are wrapping up this week for the “Red, White and Blue -— Veterans, We Honor You!” theme, and the fairgrounds will be busy starting Saturday when cleanup is held. Events will run from Tuesday through Sunday.

4-H entries looking good

Entries for 4-H were due July 15.

Carrie Anderson with the Phillips County Extension office said everything is looking good in that area.

The fairgrounds will get whipped into shape Saturday, with cleanup beginning at 8 a.m. Club setup will also happen Saturday.

Everyone is gearing up for the judging of general projects beginning Monday, she added.

Livestock shows begin Tuesday with the Phillips and Sedgwick County Horse Show. The show will take place in the pavilion. Barrel racing will be at the grandstands.

The rest of the animals will come to the fairgrounds Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. Large animal weigh-ins will begin at 4 p.m.

Superintendents for livestock are Jessica Oliver and Zane Hollingsworth, horses; Jason Donovan, poultry and rabbits; Grady Groshans, beef; Kevin Beck, sheep; Minda Mares, goats; and Dave Gibson, swine.

Poultry and rabbits will be Thursday, plus goat and swine shows.

Next Friday will be the beef and sheep shows, followed by the Grand and Reserve Livestock Champions returning to the ring for the Parade of Champions.

The livestock auction and Round Robin competition will be next Saturday.

Fair board president Kayla Kafka said the Bryan Kroeger family is sponsoring a new award for this year’s livestock competitors — the “Be Like Bryan” award. Kroeger was a supporter of the livestock shows before his passing this spring. The award will be announced before the livestock sale Saturday.

Open entries encouraged

The Phillips County Fair Board and Extension Office are encouraging county residents to enter their projects in the fair’s open show.

Entries can vary from sewing and craft projects to gardening and baking. A list of projects is available in the county fair book.

All open projects will be entered Wednesday, July 26, from 1-6 p.m.
