1976 — The Holyoke Town Band, directed by Jeff Davis, provides music during the Homesteaders Park dedication ceremony on Colorado Day, Aug. 1, 1976. The park has been a Centennial project of the Phillips County Centennial-Bicentennial committee. It honors the direct descendants of Phillips County homesteading pioneers who still own homestead land.

    Two new radar speed signs were installed in the school zone on South Interocean Avenue last week, notifying drivers of their speed and warning them to slow down if they are driving too fast.
    HHS senior Mark Edmonds claimed his third straight championship at the 2A Colorado State Wrestling Championships Saturday night.
    The task force associated with the Grow Our Own Physician program has decided to move forward with progress in recruiting a physician to the Holyoke area by creating a video of Holyoke and Melissa Memorial Hospital.

    R.T. and Linda Lindley, owners of Holyoke “OK” Ranch, with the help of Deb Dusenbury of Speer Cushion Company, have invented the patent-pending ORIGINAL Hydrotherapy Leg Tube™ to provide simple, effective hydrotherapy for four-legged animals.
    Douglas Moss of Holyoke attained the highest rank of Boy Scouting and entered the Eagle Scout Brotherhood in a Feb. 17 ceremony at the Lions Den in Holyoke.
    Joining Melissa Memorial Hospital’s specialty clinic, Dr. Khalid Ismail will become the only pulmonologist to offer services at the local hospital. Starting March 9, Dr. Ismail will be holding pulmonary clinics at MMH once a month.

    Dr. Robert J. Wiest will be retiring and closing his 37-year dental practice in Holyoke Feb. 28.
    Colorado will have its first-ever presidential primary election March 3. Colorado elected to switch to the presidential primary system — as opposed to the previous caucus system to indicate candidate preferences — in 1990 when the state’s voters passed a ballot measure adopting the primary selection process.
    After an extensive presentation by Robert Jacobs, director of transportation and facilities, the Board of Education for Holyoke School District Re-1J decided against the addition of a smoking facility for faculty members in the high school. Five different areas were mentioned by Jacobs as possible places for a smoking area, with the cost of ensuring that any of them meet legal requirements being between $600-$1,000.
    Due to the purchase of an electronic ballot counter by Phillips County, voters in the March 3 presidential primary will find a new look to the ballot and will have to use a special pencil provided at the polling places to mark their ballot.

Feb. 23, 1967

    An aquatic show by the Sharks of Colorado State College will highlight the open house at Holyoke’s new swimming pool Feb. 26.
    Everette Lappart of Holyoke will assume duties as acting postmaster here March 1, according to information received by Lappart and Postmaster F.B. Flanagan a few days ago. Flanagan will have completed 22 years and seven months in the office when he retires at the close of business Feb. 28.
    Rex C. Evans, clerk of the district court for Phillips County, submitted his resignation to the district judges Feb. 16, to be effective April 1. Vera Garland is expected to receive an appointment as clerk of the district court in the near future. The appointment is made by the district judges.

Feb. 26, 1942

    Mrs. Emma S. Kramer, Phillips County clerk and recorder, has been named as explosive licensing agent in and for Holyoke, the appointment having been made by the bureau of mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Her duties will be to issue licenses to vendors, purchasers and foremen. As agent, Mrs. Kramer will serve during the remainder of the war period.
    Under auspices of the Holyoke Girl Scouts, a campaign to collect small metals and steels necessary for national defense will be conducted in Holyoke. The campaign will open March 7.
    Rev. Dayton P. Muxlow, pastor of First Baptist Church, announced early this week that moving pictures of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in the Pacific Dec. 7 by the Japanese will be shown soon at the church.
