Reflecting the growing demand for Spanish language skills in the livestock industry, this fall, Colorado State University will be offering a Spanish-language certificate specifically for undergraduates interested in veterinary medicine.

Thirty-one Colorado families that have owned and operated their farms and ranches for 100 years or more will be honored at the 32nd annual Centennial Farms & Ranches ceremony on Aug. 24 at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo. Three honored farms are located in Phillips County: Koberstein Farm, 1917; Prussman-Hofmeister, 1918, Amherst; Koch Farms & Ranch Inc., 1917, Haxtun.

Close to 60 people enjoyed the fifth-straight all-Holyoke area picnic in Northglenn on Aug. 4, reporting a great time of reminiscing and getting acquainted or reacquainted.

 

Ten Years Ago

After months of debate and deliberation regarding the Great Outdoors Colorado grant for the Holyoke baseball field complex, Holyoke City Council members are close to finalizing their newest proposal that will be submitted Aug. 28. While the idea of constructing soccer fields had been thrown around at previous meetings, with 80% of survey participants voting that there is no need for such fields, it was determined that soccer fields would be left off the grant request.

Holyoke’s first attempt at summer school in four years was deemed a success, as reported by Superintendent Bret Miles at the Aug. 6 school board meeting.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Aug. 20, 1998

After pursuing an O1 visa, Dr. Saugata Sanyal and administration at Melissa Memorial Hospital received notification of approval on Aug. 5. Sanyal began practicing at MMH the following day. Still awaiting her J1 visa, Dr. Saswati Gupta is expected to receive her approval Oct. 1.

The Longaberger Company recently recognized Shirley Hirsch of Holyoke as a 1998 National Sales Award winner at its annual convention held in Columbus, Ohio, for generating annual sales of more than $60,000.

Holyoke AARP Chapter No. 1480 received its charter Aug. 23, 1973. In observance of its 25th anniversary, the chapter is planning an Aug. 24 dinner and program.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Aug. 16, 1973

Approximately 385 persons turned out for the tractor pull held at the fairgrounds last Friday night. The event was sponsored by the Holyoke Lions Club.

Last Friday, a tornado was sighted northwest of Holyoke and, according to reports, touched down about 1 and a half miles west of Paoli. The only damage reported was to a combine which was rolled and completely demolished by the tornado.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Aug. 19, 1948

After the annexation of districts No. 19, 41 and 48 to District No. 39, Morning View District No. 48, which is located 7 miles north of town on Highway 51, was purchased by John Ortner. It is understood that he will give the building to the town to be used as a Girl Scout and Boy Scout meeting place and for other community activities.

The J.C. Micheals big-city grandstand circus has been contracted to furnish the entertainment for the evenings of the Phillips County Fair, which will open in Holyoke on Sept. 2.

The schools throughout the county will open Sept. 6. With the exception of two, all the rural schools will open on that day. Two of the rural schools as yet are without teachers.
