Holyoke Community Childcare Initiative is moving forward with its planned day care facility, and project coordinator Elizabeth Hutches said the prospect of easily accessible local child care is closer than it has ever been.

For the sixth consecutive year, Phillips County Department of Human Services was recognized by the state for their performance and was presented with the C-Stat award on Aug. 16.

As part of an agency-wide restructure that took effect this year, the Colorado State Forest Service has filled a new position dedicated to assisting eastern Colorado with community forestry concerns. The CSFS recently named longtime forester Donna Davis as the urban and community forestry specialist serving eastern Colorado.

House Bill 13-1135, which went into effect on Aug. 7, concerns the age at which citizens of Colorado can register to vote. Every person who has reached 16 years of age can now preregister to vote and update voter information as long as they meet all Colorado registration regulations.

Holyoke Lions Club is taking the next step in a couple improvements at the Lions Club Fishin’ Hole east of Holyoke. The group has extensively studied how to handle the pond’s blue-green algae problem and has decided to lower barley straw bales into the water. They are also addressing an issue where much of the dirt under the island platform blew away during the strong winds of the April 8 storm last year.

The Venango (Nebraska) Community Church is hosting a special ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 25, to celebrate the its 125th anniversary.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Aug. 27, 1998

On. Aug. 24, the Holyoke planning commission gave at least the initial nod to requests that would move along the development of an assisted living facility in Holyoke. On a 5-1 vote, the commission agreed to recommend a zoning change that would allow for an assisted living complex on the west side of the highway, in the 400 block of South Interocean Avenue.

After a couple months of working on the recycling project, new coordinators have solved some of the problems that were facing the program in May.

Longtime Holyoke resident Esther Einspahr will be celebrating her 90th birthday on Aug. 29.

 

Fifty Years Ago

Aug. 23, 1973

Mrs. Jo Leffingwell will hold a grand opening of her Ceramic Shack, located behind Holyoke Auto and Hardware, on Aug. 25. The Ceramic Shack will handle a complete line of greenware (molded clay), stains, glazes and tools.

Kenneth Dean Robinson, 20, suspect in a shooting at Wauneta, Nebraska, was apprehended 4 miles west of Holyoke about 4 a.m. last Sunday by Holyoke patrolman Joe McCallum and police chief Forrest Watson.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Aug. 26, 1948

The Holyoke Gun Club, which now boasts 107 members, has started the construction of a new clubhouse at their club grounds, which is east of Holyoke on grounds near the airport. The building will be built just north of the present clubhouse and will be constructed of cinder block.

Members of the building committee of the Holyoke Lions Club are now making plans to hold a rally meeting on the evening of Sept. 16 at the American Legion hall for the purpose of explaining what the club has done and what their plans are relative to the completion of the Girl and Boy Scout home.

The selective service board members for Phillips County have been appointed by Gov. Knous, according to information received today from Col. Howard E. Reed, state director of the selective service system in Colorado.
