Issac Brandt, 18, son of Jerry and Debbie Brandt of Holyoke, was chosen as one of eight winners for nonprofit organization Youth on Record’s 2016 Real Rock Star Awards. He was recognized at the organization’s gala Sept. 29 at Exdo Event Center in Denver.
The award was given to those who exemplify outstanding leadership and musicianship. His mother, Debbie, was ecstatic to see him win the award, as the eight musicians chosen in the program were selected from a group of about 1,000. “I was just very proud of him and I think this will help him know that he can achieve his dreams that he set for himself,” she said.
In addition to winning the award, Brandt performed an original song at the gala with his Youth on Record mentor, Shewit Hailu.
Brandt is currently taking classes at NJC in Sterling and hopes to study music production at the Art Institute of Colorado.
He began playing at Youth on Record in 2015, but has always cultivated a passion for music. He mainly plays guitar and drums, but has a knack for music in general. “Any instrument he picks up he can play,” Debbie said. “He has started writing his own music.”
