Nothing cooler than fire prevention

National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15, was sure to have inspired more than one Halloween costume after visits by the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department at Dragon’s Wagon Preschool Wednesday, Oct. 12, and Holyoke Elementary School Thursday, Oct. 13. At the elementary school, local firefighters showed off equipment and uniforms and reviewed fire safety for kindergarten through second grade.
In an outdoor presentation, Shawn Maloney and Greg DeWeese modeled fire gear and explained equipment — from types of axes to smoke-sucking fans — before letting students climb up for a look inside the fire truck. They even fired off the stationary water hose from the truck, much to the children’s delight.
Inside, Bob Heldenbrand and Shaun Beck reviewed common household dangers and what to do in case of a fire. Students also learned about various prevention and safety features like smoke alarms and glowing exit signs and had many, many questions to ask the firefighters.
