8 letterwinners return for Dragon softball

With six seniors and eight total letterwinners on the team, the Holyoke softball team has experience to build around.

But the team will need to do some rebuilding after losing six seniors from last year’s team.

Head Coach Kendra Schlachter said the Dragons have some big shoes to fill.

“I have 17 girls out, and we are excited to see what the season will bring. Once again I have six seniors, so there’s a good sense of leadership on the field,” she continued.

Led by returning letterwinners Leslie Carrasco, Samantha Seger, Elyce Sisseck, Fallon Bamford, Fatima Nuñez, Parker Steggs and Madi Clapper, it’s an athletic group, Schlachter said, capable of adapting in different situations.

“This is the group that I can put anywhere, any position and they will be able to play that spot,” she added

Team goals for the season include growth every game, continued work and progress as a team.

“In the past we have struggled at the plate, so it is a huge team goal to be a little bit more successful and confident at the plate,” Schlachter said.

Tough schedule ahead

Without smaller schools having teams, facing 3A competition will make for a challenging schedule.

The Dragons’ schedule begins Friday, Aug. 18, with the two-day Platte Valley Tournament. Holyoke will play The Academy and Platte Valley to start. Schlachter said both are very competitive teams, so the Dragons are excited to see what they can do.

Holyoke will face Limon, Yuma County and Burlington for league games.
