Boys earn No. 1 seed

Holyoke beats Yuma, Wray for 6-1 league record

Holyoke boys entered district play as the No. 1 seed after defeating Yuma 66-41 Tuesday, Feb. 14, at home and Wray 56-41 Friday, Feb. 17, on the road.
Coach Scott Dille said it was great to earn the No. 1 seed, but also anticipates tough district play. “If you look at the RPI standings for CHSAA, we have five of the top nine teams in 2A in our district,” he said. “It is going to be a tough task just to get in the top three of districts (to move on to regionals).”
Dille was pleased with the tough defense and great offensive rhythm in the Tuesday Yuma game, but said the Dragons lacked consistency playing Wray. “Looking forward, we need to get better and learn to play our game regardless of the situation,” he said.

Against Yuma, the Dragons started out “a little flat” in the first half before taking off in the third quarter for what Dille said was possibly the team’s best quarter of the year.
“We were ahead 22-17 at halftime, but at the end of the third quarter it was 50-25,” said Dille. “We really did a great job forcing them to take tough shots and finished possessions with good defensive rebounding. On the offensive end, we had really great rhythm that quarter.” Holyoke finished the game with a 66-41 win.
It was a slow first half. Gunnar Kroeger and M.J. Taylor each had a 3-pointer in the first quarter, and the quarter ended a 13-6 Dragon lead.
