Dragon football season ends in Monte Vista

Last weekend Holyoke High School’s football team traveled to the southern end of the state to face Monte Vista in the first round of 1A football playoffs. Holyoke was ranked No. 9 and Monte Vista was ranked No.8 so it was expected to be a close game, and it certainly was. Ultimately, the Pirates won the Nov. 5 contest 28-21 and ended the Dragons’ season.

In other playoff action last weekend, No. 1 Limon beat No. 16 Flatirons Academy 42-14, No. 2 Strasburg beat No. 15 Burlington 41-7, No. 3 Wiggins beat No. 14 North Fork 52-20, No. 13 Colorado Springs Christian upset No. 4 Buena Vista 21-18, No. 5 Yuma beat No.

12 Rye, No. 6 Wray shut out No. 11 Meeker 34-0, and No. 7 Centauri beat No. 10 Gunnison 26-14.

In the Holyoke-Monte Vista matchup, the Pirates took an early lead, scoring a touchdown along with a 2-point conversion. They extended their lead to 14-0 with another TD before the quarter was over. The Dragons ended the period in possession of the ball and immediately scored in the second quarter. It wasn’t long before Holyoke scored again and tied up the game 14-14. The last few minutes of the half were characterized by turnovers. The ball quickly went back and forth from the Pirates to the Dragons and back again. Monte Vista ended up with the ball and just enough time to score one more touchdown. They went into the locker room with a 20-14 lead.
