Experience gained on state wrestling mats

Success was measured in terms of experience for two Dragon wrestlers at the 2A state tournament in Denver Feb. 16-18.
Sophomore Jesus Trejo and junior Antoni Martinez (a first-year wrestler) both went 0-2 on the state mats, but gained valuable experience in getting the feel for competing at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
Coach Dusty McConnell cited their youth and their potential for returning to the Big Show.
Trejo competed at 120 lbs. this year and at 113 on the state mats last year. He still has two years of high school wrestling eligibility, and McConnell said he looks for the young wrestler to participate in summer camps to enhance his skills.
Martinez started wrestling this year, and loves it, according to the coach. He added that the 195-lb. junior wants to do whatever it takes in the summer to prepare for his senior season next year.
McConnell expressed appreciation to all the fans who showed up for state, as well as to assistant coaches Luke Garrett and Jesus Hermosillo.
Rocky Ford won the 2A state tourney with 188.5 points, followed by Meeker 160 and John Mall 134. A total of 52 2A high school teams competed.
