Five Years Ago — July 16, 2015

After trying with no luck to sell their business for about three and a half years, Flower Garden owners Julie and David Dirks decided to close the doors this year. July 11 was the last open day at the flower shop at 127 S. Interocean Ave.

After recently moving back to Holyoke with her husband, Louis Warren, Karen Jo Jorgensen is now teaching yoga classes at Brianna Farnes’ Enchanted Moments photography studio at 221 N. Interocean Ave.

Students in grades 5-9 learned all about what it takes to launch, manage and grow a small business at the July 7-10 Youth Entrepreneurship Camp sponsored by Phillips County Economic Development.

 

Ten Years Ago — July 15, 2010

Melissa Memorial Hospital is celebrating 50 years of service in Holyoke. The East Phillips County Hospital District was approved July 11, 1960. The community is invited to the hospital on July 22 for a showing of the completed FBLA clock tower, benches and time capsule; tours of the facility; and a plaque to be presented to one hospital employee who has been there the full 50 years.

Phillips County welcomed its newest staff member at the Colorado State University Extension office this week. Kindra Plumb recently began as the Extension program associate, 4-H youth development with a livestock emphasis.

After a mentally and physically challenging week, 16-year-old Janel Rodriguez can proudly say she successfully completed training at the Colorado State Patrol Youth Academy. Young people from all over the state participated in the program June 20-26 in Golden.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago — July 20, 1995

A storm made its way through Phillips County Monday afternoon, July 17, devastating local crops. For some farmers near Paoli, harvest is basically over now, due to 100% losses being expected in areas.

Public events at the 1995 Phillips County Fair will be spread over four days, July 27-30, instead of covering nearly a week as they did in 1994. Several types of entertainment have been added to the fair this year, including a demolition derby.

Corey Zeiler started training as Holyoke’s new director of public housing on July 13. Former director Keith Austin’s resignation was effective July 14.

 

Fifty Years Ago — July 16, 1970

Rev. Evan V. Brian is the new minister of the United Methodist Church of Holyoke.

Phillips County wheat farmers are experiencing one of the largest wheat crops in many, many years. With the cutting about 90% done in the Holyoke area and 75% done in the Haxtun area, Phillips County elevators had taken approximately 4,225,000 bushels of wheat as of noon Wednesday.

Laurie Stuart is one of the featured acts that will be seen Aug. 6 as part of the Western varieties revue to be held at the Phillips County Fair. Miss Stuart will perform with an exceptionally fine juggling and unicycle act. Also featured in the afternoon revue will be Red Sands and his Colorado Cowboys band; Rocky Starr, nationally known country western singer; Dave Owens, clown and trapeze artist; and Miss Adair MacEachern, country western singer.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — July 19, 1945

A new addition to the Holyoke refrigerated locker plant of the Holyoke Market is nearing completion as Messrs. Powell and Brethouwer finish the interior of the building or north wing. The addition will add 250 new lockers to the plant. There will be a processing room, a cooling room, a sharp freezer room, a cold storage room and a smokehouse which will also serve as a curing room. The new addition will double the capacity of the present plant.

Rev. and Mrs. David H. Bergstrom and children, Joanne and Roger, arrived recently from Oakland, Nebraska. Rev. Bergstrom is the new pastor of the Fairfield Evangelical Covenant Church of the Fairfield community.

Mr. and Mrs. Asher Hester closed their store temporarily last week preparatory to moving into the former office building of Dr. J.M. Drost, first door north of the Peerless Theatre.
