4-H achievement celebrated in October

Phillips County 4-H clubs celebrated another great year at their annual achievement program Sunday, Oct. 3, at Phillips County Event Center.

County 4-Hers also recognized National 4-H Week, and a few of the members met at the courthouse with Extension agent Jessie Stewart and Phillips County commissioners for a National 4-H Week proclamation.

At Sunday’s program, Jessica Brown was named this year’s Friend of 4-H. For someone who doesn’t live in Phillips County, she is always nearby to lend a hand at local shows and events.

Jessica Owens, a Holyoke sophomore, was given the I Dare You Award. She was recognized for being a very kind-hearted person who is always willing to help younger members, and those around her are excited to see her bloom as a leader.

A new award was the Rookie of the Year recognition, which was awarded to Juan Nuñez, a Holyoke fifth grader, for his dedication to his club and 4-H as well as his incredible success at county and state fairs with his electric project.

Other awards announced Sunday included grand champion beef herdsmen, Better Beef Makers; GC swine herdsmen, Raising Ranchers; GC goat herdsmen, Challengers; GC sheep herdsmen, Haxtun Pioneers; GC horse herdsmen, Paoli Hustlers and Better Beef Makers; and GC poultry herdsmen, Challengers.

Record book grand champions were Cruse Weber, junior; Tessa Gales, intermediate; and Lucinda Mares, senior. Reserve champions were Kynlea Nelson, junior; Kinsley Koberstein, intermediate; and Isaiah Rueter, senior.

Aubrey Bieber from the Challengers and Nicole Schlachter from Raising Ranchers tied for champion club treasurer books.

Alexis Nelson was named most improved horseman.
