5th graders get business experience

For one day, fifth graders get the chance to step into an adult’s shoes — run a business, make a budget, write checks, spend money locally and make sure a town government is running smoothly.

This unforgettable experience is thanks to a Holyoke FBLA Partnership with Business project led by seniors Emily Jelden, Shianne Willmon and Josie Herman.

Since January, the three girls have been spending time three days a week with Holyoke fifth graders to teach them lessons on government, economics, business, civics, philanthropy, advertising, finances and more.

Local business people were also asked to join them in the classroom to lead lessons on topics that pertain to their businesses.

Fifth graders then had the chance to go through an interview process with business people and high school FBLA members to see what jobs they would get in their made-up town.
