7 Ogallala Commons interns placed in Phillips County

Phillips County has a total of seven interns through the Ogallala Commons internship program this summer, more than double the number placed in the county last year. Four interns are working in Holyoke and three in Haxtun.

Phillips County Economic Development Executive Director Trisha Herman said the internships help teach emerging leaders what it takes to make a positive impact on rural communities.

“It’s more than a job,” Herman said, noting that the program is the perfect package that has all the details an internship needs.

She added that it’s about the interns getting experience to move forward in the workforce and learning the various facets necessary for the successful running of a small community, including agriculture, education, health care, business and more.

“Educating our youth before they enter the workforce is so important,” Herman said. She was also pleased to note that this summer’s seven interns is the highest number yet in the four years of PCED’s collaboration with the program.

According to the Ogallala Commons website, the nonprofit organization provides education and leadership to build vibrant communities in the Great Plains region. Interns gain work experience and build professional skills with the aim of bettering these communities.
