Area equestrian team formed

Drake Johnson Performance Horses has announced its newly formed western show team — the Golden Plains Equestrian Team — through the Interscholastic Equestrian Association.

Youth in grades 6-12 who like to ride horses and who are interested in competition are encouraged to check out the new team. Owning their own horse is not a requirement.

IEA was formed and organized in 2002 to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction available to middle and secondary school students.

Through the IEA, students have the opportunity to earn scholarships toward their college education, as well as experience showing in a format similar to collegiate programs. Students do not need to own a horse or even be an experienced equestrian.

The program is set up on a level system where riders may fall in a level anywhere from beginner to advanced. Riders attend weekly practices at their team barn where the horses and tack are provided.
