Auntie’s Antiques and Farm Style Decor offers variety of unique items

For the past year, Shanda Willmon has enjoyed picking, a process where she goes through items on farmsteads and outbuildings with permission in order to acquire interesting and unique antiques and other objects. Her new business, Auntie’s Antiques and Farm Style Decor, gives her the chance to share some of these items — and much more — with the community.

The business opened Thursday, Jan. 27, at 108 S. Interocean Ave. It offers home decor, chalk and silk paint for refurbishing furniture, homemade signs, jewelry, candles, refurbished decor, dressers, tables, chairs, hutches, cabinets and much more.

Willmon started picking and going to auctions last year with Kayla Kafka of Country Treasures Floral & More. She said this is a very enjoyable activity for her to do with Kafka.

“I had so much fun that I just kept doing it,” she said.

She pointed out that her grandpa on her mother’s side was a big barterer and had something similar to a pawn shop. While Wilmon said she didn’t understand the idea behind it at the time, after the last year of picking with Kafka, she discovered she really likes it.

She added that she especially enjoys seeing how antiques can be transformed. “That’s what I really like,” she said.

Willmon acquired many items from picking at a farmstead in Kansas. She also gets interesting antiques and other items from auctions and estate sales. Auntie’s Antiques and Farm Style Decor currently has 10 vendors who each rent a booth to put their own items in, and there’s likely room for five or six more.

“We’re trying to get a little bit of everything so there’s always options,” she said.
