Better late than never

Wheat harvest is a welcome sight in many fields in the area, including Joe Krogmeier’s white wheat field southwest of Holyoke. Dominic Krogmeier is driving the combine on a sunny 96-degree day Friday, July 12. Steve Young of CHS Grainland said the cooperative saw its first load of wheat arrive Wednesday, July 10, which is close to two weeks later than normal. Moisture delayed harvest, said Young, but as a result they are seeing excellent test weights, very good yields and quality, and average protein. As of Monday, July 15, CHS Grainland estimated it was 25% done with harvest. Steve Bahnsen of Paoli Farmers Co-op said their first load was also July 10, noting harvest has really been ramping up with the hot, dry weather. “It’s coming along good,” he said. — The Holyoke Enterprise | Johnson Publications
