Chamber of Commerce brainstorms solutions as money runs short

Holyoke Chamber of Commerce gave an update to members at a monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 22, after seeking input through a survey regarding future plans for the organization.
Early in 2018, the chamber found it could not meet its budget solely with member dues and event sponsorships. This was due partly to an increase in Colorado’s minimum wage, which continues to climb.
In March 2018, the City of Holyoke approved giving the chamber $500 per month to supplement the budget. In return, the City received a complimentary membership and sponsorship recognition at all chamber events.
This year, the City rejected the chamber’s proposal of $500 per month at its Jan. 2 meeting.
That leaves the chamber with over a $200 shortfall each month to keep the organization running as it has been.
Chamber board president Elizabeth Hutches reported to members that if everyone renews their membership in 2019, the chamber could pay a director minimum wage for 20 hours per week — nothing else. That leaves no budget for rent, internet, supplies, etc.
“Everything we do is on a shoestring budget,” said Hutches, indicating the chamber already operates with as little as it can.
