Deadlines near for fair

Open class, special themes provide competition for all ages

    While 4-H projects and livestock show may be at the center of the Phillips County Fair, there are countless opportunities for other people of all ages to get involved Tuesday-Sunday, July 23-28.
    Many of the contests and events will focus on the Bushels of Fun theme, so start thinking about what that means to you.
    The 2019 fairbook, including complete rules and information on all the available contests, can be found online at www.phillipscofair.com. The Extension office can be reached at 970-854-3616 for additional questions.
    Registration deadlines for many fair events fall before its official start date, so be sure to get signed up on time.
    
Apply for rabbit, chicken, goat contests by July 15
    Rabbit bingo, chicken bingo and the catch it goat contests provide a special opportunity for kids who are interested in participating in 4-H next year.  Applications for each of the contests are due Monday, July 15, at 4:30 p.m., and applicants must be 8-18 years old as of Dec. 31. Applicants must also enroll in Phillips County 4-H by March 1, 2020.
    The catch it goat contest will be held Thursday, July 25, after goat judging, which begins at 4 p.m.
    Rabbit bingo, followed by chicken bingo, will be held Friday, July 26, after the 4 p.m. parade of champions. All three contests will be held in the livestock show ring.

Parade entries requested by July 19
    Saturday, July 27, will begin with the 10 a.m. fair parade. Groups, organizations and individuals are encouraged to register to be in the parade by Friday, July 19, but entries will be accepted up to the day of the parade. Cash prizes, ribbons and a grand prize trophy will be awarded.
    Check-in on the day of the parade is at the Holyoke Elementary entrance on Kellogg Street beginning at 7:30 a.m. To be judged, entries must be checked in and in line by 8:30 a.m. All entries must be checked in and in line by 9:30 a.m.

Space is limited for ranch rodeo
    Registration is open already and space is limited for the fair’s ranch rodeo Wednesday, July 24, at 6 p.m. To sign up, contact Chance Skomp at 308-883-3019.
    The evening will also include mutton bustin’ for kids. There’s no need to preregister, but there is a limit of 6 years or 60 pounds for all riders.
    For this year’s barrel racing Thursday, July 25, no pre-entries are being taken. All competitors must register on site the day of.
