Estate planning workshop in Holyoke Feb. 15

Colorado State University Extension will host workshops focusing on business succession and estate planning in Holyoke Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Ortner Room of the Phillips County Event Center.
Planning how to transfer a farm, ranch or other business to the next generation is difficult. Just as is planning for retirement and formalizing an estate plan. The many emotional issues involved with such planning causes people to procrastinate. They don’t want to make some of the tough decisions, so they don’t!
Yet if they don’t proactively plan for retirement, select someone to take over the ranch or formalize estate plans, things could get messy. They may miss out spending much time with grandchildren or touring the country. They could cause the family to argue or even split up due to the unwillingness to talk with families and plan for the future. Also, the government has a plan for settling the estate — though no one may like the results.
Experts at Colorado State University understand people may be uncomfortable with these topics and the importance of planning for the transfer of a business to the next generation, making plans for retirement and formalizing estate plans.
