FBLA, FCCLA members get nationals experience in joint trip

Students from Holyoke High School’s FBLA and FCCLA chapters went on a joint trip to Denver and Glenwood Springs from June 28-July 1.

The trip was designed by FCCLA adviser Karen Ortner and FBLA adviser Lori Nelson to congratulate Holyoke’s national qualifiers from each organization.

The trip was open to the 16 FCCLA and 11 FBLA national qualifiers, and five students from each organization chose to attend.

FCCLA attendees were Max Kleve, Yoselin Peña, Jimena Nuñez, Alma Alejandre and Andrea Marquez.

From FBLA, the attendees were Cade Killin, Emmanuel Vasquez, Ethan Schneller, Tayla Martin and Katelyn Kropp. Ortner and Nelson chaperoned.

FCCLA members did not attempt to compete in their organization’s virtual national conference due to cost. Ortner noted that FBLA’s virtual national conference was more reasonably priced, and FBLA members competed in a virtual national conference.

Kailar Hayes, Diego Jimenez and Kenneth Lindholm placed ninth in the nation in the partnership with business competition.

Ortner said she and Nelson were glad to be able to provide a national conference experience for such a great group of students, although they agreed it was a different feel without the in-person conference component.

None of the students on the trip had attended a national conference in the past, and this trip was the biggest for either organization since 2019.
