Forget Pisa, it’s the leaning tower of elevators

Unlike the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is still standing, this century-old elevator complex came crashing down in the last month and created a noticeable gap in the Holyoke skyline. CHS Grainland made the choice to remove the old, dangerous facilities located along the railroad tracks northwest of downtown Holyoke, and demolition began at the beginning of September. Many residents have been tracking the progress of Kansas-based Smith Construction, and some were lucky enough to witness a few of the large pieces coming down. The front structure is pictured at top Friday, Sept. 11; another chunk is pictured in center Wednesday, Sept. 16; and the final elevator in the group is pictured at bottom Friday, Sept. 18.
