Hail and heavy rains stripped this corn field 7 miles east and several miles south of Holyoke on Friday evening, Aug. 25. — Johnson Publications

Hail, rain follow wide path Friday

The sky darkened, the wind blew, and rain and hail fell Friday evening, Aug. 25, starting about 5:45 p.m. southeast of Holyoke.
Beginning about 7 miles east of Holyoke, south of U.S. Highway 6, the storm headed southeast through Chase County, Nebraska, and into Dundy County, Nebraska, as well.
Accompanied by high winds, the hail stripped corn and millet fields, as well as gardens in the rural area.
Lots of water and leaf-strippage almost to the ears in some places is what Phillips County Farm Service Agency Executive Director Ron Koberstein saw when assessing the area immediately after the storm.
With corn in the late stages of development, the actual percentage of damage won’t be known until harvest.
