Cow moose visiting the High Plains

YUMA PIONEER, Sept. 8 — A cow moose has wandered across southern Washington and Yuma counties. Josh Melby, area officer for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, said it likely is in Kansas by now.

The first sighting was reported south of Akron. Melby said he also has received multiple reports from landowners in southern Yuma County.

Michelle Smith was one of those. She said it randomly showed up at her house located near the Arikaree River one day and ended up spending the night before continuing its journey.

Melby said it likely came from the northern Front Range. He said it is probably younger and was looking for a site when it got pushed out of its area.
