Scheunemann’s auction clears out 120-year-old business on main street

A few fixtures on the main floor and other items in the basement, office and storerooms are all that remain at Scheunemann’s Department Store at 105 S. Interocean  Ave. in Holyoke after a Saturday, Oct. 12, auction.

Established in 1899, the family store was closed just over a year ago upon the sudden death of store owner/manager August Freeman “Chip” Scheunemann II on Sept. 19, 2018.

Merchandise and fixtures from the store, including a beautiful oak cash register that had been in the store most of its 120 years, were featured at the auction. Additionally, personal items from Chip’s home, shop tools and family antiques, were sold.
