Emerald Awards section earns first in national newspaper contest

The Holyoke Enterprise was recognized nationally with a first-place award in the National Newspaper Association 2017 Better Newspaper Contest.

The Enterprise’s special section for the Emerald Awards was the leader in the category for Best Special News, Sports or Feature Section or Edition for daily and non-daily newspapers with circulations less than 3,000.

Staff members Darci Tomky, Brenda Brandt and Karen Ortner worked in partnership with the Holyoke School District and local sponsors to recognize three outstanding school employees with feature articles, photos and ads in a six-page special section published April 28, 2016.

Judges comments included, “A simple but compelling section honoring educators and school staffers with thoughtful community-oriented awards. Each recipient is treated equally, with a Q&A-format sidebar that adds levels of interest to the reading experience.”
