Weekend wireless disruption sends PC Telcom into overdrive

Throughout Holyoke, businesses, students and gamers have felt the impact of a Disruptive Distributed Denial of Service attack that began Friday, June 9. Of course, in a time when so much of day-to-day activity relies on an internet connection, there are probably few who didn’t notice the weekend holdup.

No one, however, was more aware of the event than employees at PC Telcom who worked through the weekend and have kept busy into the work week, restoring wireless access to their many affected customers as quickly as they can.

CEO/GM Vince Kropp and Marketing Manager Mike Cline were quick to reassure concerned citizens that personal data has not been compromised. They added that the attack does not impact their cable internet customers, who include those in Haxtun, Julesburg, Ovid and Sedgwick.

Furthermore, the DDoS event only affected customers who use a specific Zyxel router. Those who did lose wireless internet access due to the attack are predominantly from Holyoke and Amherst, with some fixed wireless customers in neighboring communities.

Cline explained that the DDoS was a Botnet attack. Specific Zyxel routers were targeted and restored to default factory settings. While attackers gain nothing — except, perhaps, bragging rights — the reset routers are no longer set up to connect to the internet.
