Students jump on #Selfie trend with portraits at art show

Close to 330 pieces of art are on display at Prairie Winds Art Center for the spring Holyoke Elementary School art show. This year’s theme, #Selfie, was celebrated at the opening reception Thursday, April 20.

Art teacher Christina Martinez said the show will continue through May 12, with the gallery open every Friday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Each class created portraits inspired by different people. Award winners are listed in order of placing, including some honorable mentions.

Kindergarten students studied Paul Klee and used watercolor and oil pastels for captivating color and sharp lines. Winners are Lili Vasquez, Kyle Goldenstein and Lily Sprague.

The progression of the LEGO person inspired first-graders to draw themselves as LEGO characters using simple shapes. Winners are Alexis Nelson, Jayden Martinez and Isaac Juarez.

Cut paper and oil pastels helped second-graders create a cubist self-portrait, following in the footsteps of Pablo Picasso. Winners are Jacob Quintana, Peyton Adams and Elia Wear.
