‘COMEDIE’ on display at NJC

The Peter L. Youngers Fine Arts Gallery in E.S. French Hall at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling is pleased to present an observational collection of drawings by artist Shelby Shadwell. “COMEDIE” features large-scale drawings, exploring the visual tensions between representation and abstraction.
Shadwell is a two-time recipient of the Visual Arts Fellowship from the Wyoming Arts Council and actively exhibits across the nation. He is currently an associate professor in the department of art and art history at the University of Wyoming.
The exhibit features drawings of subjects meant to convey revulsion and decay, as well as to be objects that are sumptuous and attractive for the audience. The act of rendering drawings in such scale and detail is a form of individual catharsis for the artist.
“I believe that my work fits into the ongoing dialogue that elevates the mundane, the ephemeral or the vulgar to a higher status thereby reflecting parts of society that we often refuse to acknowledge in the mirror of traditional norms,” said Shadwell.
