10 Tips on Tipping

At the holidays, who gets paid? And how much?

While you’re busy shopping for Mom, Dad, kids, cousins and more this holiday season, don’t forget about the people in your life who you interact with monthly, weekly or even daily. Christmas is the perfect time to show your appreciation for professionals like hairdressers, mail carriers, babysitters and more.
According to Consumer Reports, 60 percent of Americans gave tips to one or more service providers during the holidays last year. The country gave out a total average of $45 in tips, up $5 from 2016. The majority of those tips were in cash. Consumer Reports’ survey found that the people most likely to be tipped at the holidays were housekeepers, child care providers, school teachers, hairdressers and manicurists/pedicurists. Garbage collectors were the least likely to get a tip.
The following are 10 general guidelines, but please remember that cultural expectations, relationships and family budgets will make each situation different.

1. Tip the people who have the biggest impact on your life. If you only see them a couple times a year, they probably shouldn’t be on the top of your priority list. Don’t feel obligated to give something to everyone.

2. Put your tip in an envelope so it doesn’t look like an accident. Take the time to include a short handwritten note.

3. When possible, give the tip directly to the individual. It’s more meaningful face to face with a handshake or hug.
