20-year-old dies in 1-vehicle crash
The life of 20-year-old Rey Reyna was cut short Thursday, Dec. 12, when he died in a car crash southeast of Holyoke.
Reyna moved to town about two and a half months ago to work at Seaboard Foods. He was living with the family of his cousin Rubi Covarrubias and her husband Rosendo Calixto. He was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and grew up in Texas.
Covarrubias said Reyna was always happy and he came to Holyoke with the intent of being a better person. He enjoyed spending time with his family, she added.
An account has been set up at Holyoke Community Federal Credit Union under Covarrubias’ name for costs associated with transporting Reyna to Texas for burial. Donations can also be made online at gofundme.com/f/rey-reyna.
According to a report from Colorado State Patrol, at approximately 4:44 p.m., Reyna was northbound on County Road 53 in a 1999 Chrysler Sebring.
In the area of County Road 14, the vehicle went off the left side of the roadway and returned back to the roadway, turning broadside. Reyna, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected as the vehicle began to overturn and go off the right side of the roadway, coming to rest on its top.
CSP reported that Reyna died at the scene. Speed is considered to be a factor, and the roadway surface was dry dirt with no inclimate weather conditions present. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
