2019 Trek to The Summit Challenge leads to mountains of success

The 12 week health and fitness challenge, A Healthier Weigh, encourages increasing activity, making wise food choices and living a healthier lifestyle. Starting Jan. 7, participants in teams of four or individuals weighed in, measured their waist circumference, and had their body fat percentage and BMI assessed.
There were six education lessons available online that emphasized increasing personal fitness to improve and maintain health and refocus on healthy eating and lifestyle patterns. Three cooking sessions were available to participants throughout the 12 weeks and were counted as alternatives to the written lesson responses. The cooking sessions allowed for participants to cook healthy recipes and put into practice some of the tips shared during the evening.
Discussion reinforced the different types of carbohydrates and artificial sweeteners, sources of fiber, the different types of fats and limiting salt in the diet. Each week individuals and captains of the teams reported their total steps to Extension to foster accountability and motivation.
