Annual MMH cancer walk a success

Strong winds and occasional rain did not stop people from turning out to participate in Melissa Memorial Hospital’s cancer walk on the hospital grounds Saturday evening, Aug. 29.

Nearly 100 walkers arrived to remember and honor those in their lives who have experienced cancer. Family members honored survivors with flowers, and the survivors led their families in the walk.

Holyoke Chamber of Commerce provided ice cream to any walkers who got hungry during the walk.

The event took in $4,213, making this the most successful walk yet.

Donations were made through the walk itself or through purchase of T-shirts and luminarias honoring those with cancer. A total of 130 luminarias lined the walkers’ route.

All proceeds will go to a new 3D mammography unit set to be installed by Sept. 22, as long as the FDA approves.

Donations are still being accepted. Make checks payable to MMHF. Donations may be dropped off at MMH or mailed to 1001 E. Johnson St. in Holyoke.
