Legal vs. illegal fireworks: Know the difference
With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, the Holyoke Police Department would like to remind everyone that fireworks that leave the ground and explode are illegal in Colorado.

Examples of fireworks that are illegal are bottle rockets, parachutes, missiles, firecrackers, Roman candles, M-80s and mortars.

Penalties for possessing or using illegal fireworks can include a fine up to $300 under the Holyoke municipal code.

Some areas ban all fireworks, but in the City of Holyoke, fireworks legal in the state are legal here. Examples of fireworks that are legal are sparklers, fountains, snakes, smoke bombs and glow worms.

Residents should be aware that even legal fireworks can present dangers. Sparklers burn between 1,200 and 2,000 degrees. Always use fireworks away from dry grass and buildings, and have water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

For questions regarding what fireworks are legal, call the Holyoke Police Department at 970-854-2244.
