Now would be a good time to stock up on stamps; first-class Forever to go up 5 cents
The United States Postal Service has proposed a rate hike to go into effect Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, according to information from usps.com. The most notable jump is the first-class Forever stamp, which is increasing 5 cents, from 50 cents to 55 cents. The great thing about Forever stamps is that those purchased before the rate increase can still be used at any time without needing additional postage.
Additional ounces for letters will actually be decreasing — 21 cents to 15 cents. Metered 1-ounce letters will raise from 47 cents to 50 cents. Outbound 1-ounce international letters will stay at $1.15, and domestic postcards remain the same at 35 cents. Additional USPS products will also be making small increases.
“The Postal Service has some of the lowest letter mail postage rates in the industrialized world and also continues to offer a great value in shipping,” said the USPS website. “The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.”
