HVFD officers elected
    Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department held its annual meeting Thursday, Jan. 3. Officers reported on activities of the past year and elected officers for 2019.
    Those elected were John Durbin, chief; Stacy Rueter, first assistant chief; Sam Distefano, second assistant chief; Steve Young, president; Bob Heldenbrand, vice president; and Josh Young, secretary.
    
Register for English classes Thursday
    English classes are beginning this month at Zion Lutheran Church, 240 S. High School Ave. in Holyoke. Registration is Thursday, Jan. 17, from 7-9 p.m., and the first class is Thursday, Jan. 24, from 7-9 p.m.
    Different levels of learning are offered, including basic and intermediate. A certificate of attendance will be awarded at the end of the course. Classes are taught in a family-friendly environment. For more information, call 970-466-2548.
    
Make plans to attend worship event Jan. 25
    “A Call to First Love: He’s in the Waiting” will be a time of worship, teaching and ministry Friday, Jan. 25, from 6-9 p.m. at Phillips County Event Center. Guest speaker Julaine Christensen is an author, psalmist, revivalist and teacher. She has recorded six worship albums and has authored a devotional called “Just Me, My Coffee & My Secret Time” and a pamphlet called “What is Worship Anyway?” She and her husband founded the Omaha HUB and Current Fire Ministries.
    
No school Monday
    Students in Holyoke School District will get a day off Monday, Jan. 21, due to a teacher inservice.
