Becker, Mares are top showmen
Phillips County 4-H’ers got in on some of the action of the Colorado State Fair, which was celebrating 150 years Aug. 26-Sept. 5 in Pueblo.
Tenley Becker, a Holyoke fifth grader, and Lucinda Mares, a Holyoke sophomore, did well in the state fair livestock competition.
Becker was named champion junior beef showman and then went on to compete against all division champions and reserve champions where she earned reserve overall supreme champion showman in the market steer competition.
Mares was awarded a certificate for outstanding character among goat exhibitors. She also had the third overall market lamb and was the reserve champion senior market lamb showman.
As the grand champion senior round robin showman at the county fair, Mares qualified to compete in a written exam and showmanship contest at the state fair where she earned reserve overall master showmanship for Colorado.
In the 4-H general projects, Juan Albino Nuñez III, a Holyoke sixth grader, won reserve grand champion, champion and first place for his electricity project.
