One of Holyoke’s more telling traditions involves community members, from all walks of life, gathering at the cemetery to put out and take up the hundreds of flags that honor veterans interred there. Both military and civilian sacrifices honored at Memorial Day service

A small yet solemn crowd assembled at Holyoke Cemetery for the May 27 Memorial Day service. As guest speaker Lt. Col. Bob Russell put it, they gathered to “honor not only the veterans who have given the full measure for their country but the fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and others who have supported our veterans in their defense for this great country.”
Terry Barth, commander of both VFW Post 6482 and American Legion Post 90, welcomed guests to the service, and attention was quickly directed to a single folded flag among countless others already flying. Scouts from Pack and Troop 32 unfurled the flag and raised it to half staff, setting the tone for the remainder of the service. Led by Braden Gift, the Scouts included Hudson Koellner, Sebastien Lopez and Sylvester Jones.
Post Chaplain Mike Ralph delivered a Memorial Day prayer, and Colby Purkeypile sang “Letter From Home” and “American Soldier.” Representing the American Legion Auxiliary, Susan Roll Walters and Linda Jelden, displayed memorial wreaths.
