Carbohydrate counting webinar planned Feb. 15

All of us need carbohydrates for our main source of energy. The leading sources of carbohydrates come from grain-based foods, fruit, dairy products and starchy vegetables. Desserts and sugary beverages contribute, too.
Whatever type of carbohydrates one eats, the body works to break them down to their simplest form: glucose. Glucose is then carried by the blood to cells in our body for energy. Unused glucose is stored in the liver as glycogen. Normally insulin, glycogen and other hormone levels rise and fall to keep blood sugar in a normal range.
However, when people have diabetes, their body’s glucose control systems may not work correctly or efficiently enough to keep blood sugar under control. This is where tracking carbohydrates and implementing other things, such as exercise, medication, insulin injections, etc., come into play.
