The Constitution was signed Sept. 17, 1787, by 39 of 55 delegates who attended the Constitutional Convention. It was ratified the following year.

Celebrating the Constitution

Framers of the U.S. Constitution made their goals for their newly independent nation clear in the document’s preamble.

They created the Constitution to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and future generations.

Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the Constitution Sept. 17, 1787. It is also known as Citizenship Day, recognizing all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.

Under America’s original governing document, the Articles of Confederation, the national government consisted only of a single legislative body known as the Congress of the Confederation. No president or judicial branch yet existed, and states operated with a great deal of independence.
