City council moves forward on fireworks ordinance

Following up on Holyoke City Council’s request for an ordinance that prohibits the use of fireworks within city limits, attorney Al Wall presented Ordinance No. 1-2020 at the Feb. 18 city council meeting for its consideration.

Council members approved the ordinance on first reading, and a final reading and passage will be held at the March 3 meeting.

Wall explained that the state of Colorado has an existing fireworks ordinance that carries a maximum fine of $900. The City’s ordinance, however, will have a maximum fine of $300.

According to Ordinance No. 1-2020, it is unlawful to sell, possess or discharge fireworks within Holyoke. That does not include such items as sparklers. The City will have the power to grant permits for supervised public displays of fireworks.

Wall is also in the process of drafting an ordinance about RV parks. There are extensive requirements, he explained, and he will meet with superintendent Mark Brown and council member Kevin Scott to work out the details.
