City hears comments from residents

A dozen community members attended the Aug. 3 Holyoke City Council meeting to continue the discussion of Holyoke’s streets and to address other topics.

Steve Brown said he was glad to see that the seal coat project went well and was wondering if it’s possible to have a regular street department report to provide updates on how many potholes and alleys have been fixed since the last meeting. He added that he hopes the council will create a five-year street maintenance plan.

Cherrie Brown also emphasized the importance of having a five-year plan for street maintenance. She said there used to be five-year plans for everything and all the committees would report at city council meetings.

She added that her main concern goes back to the budget. She said numerous issues could come up at once if time hasn’t been spent analyzing the potential issues individually.

“When we’re not planning five years out, how are we going to plan for all those things?” she asked.

She pointed out that she appreciates all the work the city’s done on the streets, adding that the streets look good on top, but it’s like lipstick on a pig
