City urging residents to sort recycling after 2nd warning

In 2017, the City of Holyoke was warned about improperly-sorted garbage in the blue recyclables dumpster on the east side of the Holyoke Municipal Building.
Now, the City is again asking residents to think twice before depositing their recycling in the container, which is open for public use and is divided into multiple sections for different types of trash.
Marick’s Waste Disposal, which processes the City’s recycling, contacted the City on Dec. 11 regarding improperly-sorted recycling and other issues with the bin. The company warned that they will discontinue service if these issues are not resolved.
By taking the time to sort your recyclables, you can help guarantee Holyoke’s continued access to the service, and maximize efficiency and safety for garbage handlers.

Unbagged paper can’t be recycled
The first of the bin’s four compartments is reserved for paper, including newspaper, office paper and magazines. It is crucial to bag office paper, as well as shredded paper, in order for it to be processed. Newspapers and magazines do not need to go in a bag.
Corrugated cardboard cannot be placed in the blue bin at all and must be disposed of in the adjacent red bin, which is maintained by the county.
